Stretch Fabric Considerations
For this sewing pattern, you must use stretch fabric. Stretch fabric can be quite unpredictable and different fiber combinations act differently. The pattern was sized with 100% cotton jersey fabric with horizontal stretch only and low shape retention. Please consider the following when selecting fabric and selecting size.
100% cotton jersey/100% cotton knit
Using stretch fabric that is 100% cotton jersey or cotton knit usually gives a looser more comfortable fit since there is no elastane. This fabric does not always have the best shape retention due to the lack of elastane, however, a 100% cotton garment can be favored by some since it is very soft and comfortable. Cotton is more sturdy than viscose jersey. Please consider that some cotton knit and cotton jersey fabric may be knitted much tighter or looser than others.
Cotton & elastane/spandex
A small percentage (5-8%) of elastane usually gives the fabric good shape retention and typically will not loosen over time. Cotton with elastane will give a more skin-tight fitting garment. Cotton is more sturdy than viscose jersey.
100% cotton pointelle knit
Pointelle knit fabric with 100% cotton tends to become loose after use and does not retain shape well. This fabric is great for loose-fitting tank tops and slip dresses.
Viscose jersey & elastane/spandex
Viscose jersey provides a beautiful silky drape, but less breathability than 100% cotton. Pure viscose jersey has poor shape retention, however, adding a small percentage (5-8%) of elastane usually gives the fabric good shape retention.
Disclaimer: this information may differ depending on fabric manufacturer and other aspects.
Jersey is a method of knitting yarn or thread to create natural stretch. Jersey is not a fiber like cotton.
Elastane and spandex are two names for the same thing. These are used in different parts of the world.
Always wash your fabric before using.
