Stretch Fabric Considerations & Sizing
For this sewing pattern, you must use stretch fabric. Stretch fabric can be quite unpredictable and different fiber combinations act differently. Please consider the following when selecting fabric and selecting size.
The brown yoga pants are made with a 100% cotton jersey base (gsm unknown) and a waist band that is 92% cotton 8% elastane/spandex at 215 gr/m2. The green striped yoga pants are made with viscose jersey fabric that is 95% viscose 5% elastane/spandex at 175 gr/m2.
Cotton jersey/knit
Using stretch fabric that is 100% cotton jersey or cotton knit usually gives a looser more comfortable fit since there is no elastane. This fabric does not always have the best shape retention due to the lack of elastane, however, a 100% cotton garment can be favored by some since it is very soft and comfortable. Cotton is more sturdy than viscose jersey. Please consider that some cotton knit and cotton jersey fabric may be knitted much tighter or looser than others.
Cotton & elastane/spandex
A small percentage (5-8%) of elastane usually gives the fabric good shape retention and typically will not loosen over time. Cotton is more sturdy than viscose jersey.
Viscose jersey & elastane/spandex
Viscose jersey provides a beautiful silky drape, but less breathability than 100% cotton. This drape looks beautiful with yoga pants that have a nice drape at the bottom. Pure viscose jersey has poor shape retention, however, adding a small percentage (5-8%) of elastane usually gives the fabric good shape retention.
Disclaimer: this information may differ depending on fabric manufacturer and other aspects.
Jersey is a method of knitting yarn or thread to create natural stretch. Jersey is not a fiber like cotton.
Elastane and spandex are two names for the same thing. These are used in different parts of the world.
